The Underwood no. 5 was launched in 1900 and is described as "the first real modern typewriter".
As of 1874, the Underwood family produced typewriter ribbons and carbon paper and it was one of the manufacturers that produced these goods for Remington. When Remington decided to start producing ribbons internally, Underwood chose to start producing typewriters.
